The name Catchpenny, or 'Catch-a-Penny' as it sometimes used to be known is the name of a former tavern located close to us between Elie and St Monans. In the olden days villagers were not allowed to drink alcohol in their villages on a Sunday. So what did they do? They built a tavern between the villages so they could have a drink on a Sunday! The tavern unfortunately is long gone but have a look on the map on the ceiling of the Ship Inn in Elie and see if you can spot it!
